Cob Mute Swan – Cygnus olor

Cob Mute Swan preening while sitting/standing on the Ice

Friday, December 20, we took another tour around Rochester. At the Long Pond Bog where the Massasoit River flows through it before going under the road and continuing down to Buzzards Bay. The area where the river is flowing was open, but most of the rest of the bog had ice on it.

A cob mute swan was on the ice to my right side preening. I took a series of images displaying his preening.

When the cob finished preening, he tried to walk on the ice to get back into the running water, so he could swim up to his mate. Although he could stand on the ice, he had a hard time walking on it. He ended up laying on his belly and pushing himself down into the running water, where he swam up to the pen mute swan.
