Topaz Studio Sharpen AI.

In February, Topaz released a new artificial intelligence plug-in to help with blurriness in an image. Blurriness in an image is usually because by one or more of 3 problems, camera shake, focus issues, or general softness. Sharpen AI was developed with separate modules to handle each of these problems. Stabilize for natural shake reduction. Focus which will correct up to 10 pixels of focus blur. Sharpen which will correct small amounts of general softness without any artifacts.

When the plug-in first came out, and I tried it, I was not convinced that it worked. However, since then and with multiple free upgrades. I am now satisfied that it belongs in my armamentarium.

Here is an environmental image of a Great Blue Heron – Ardea herodias standing in the marsh in December. Taken at Wellfleet Bay Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary. Nikon 300s, 80-400 mm at 400 mm, f/5.6, ISO 200, 1/60 sec.

When I first looked at the pictures today, I first felt, let’s hit the delete key and move on. However, I’d like the general look of the image, so I decided to try Sharpen AI and see how it worked.

Here is the workflow that I used to process this image:
After selecting which picture I would utilize, I opened it in Photoshop to prepare.

Original Image before processing

I use the quick select tool to select the Great Blue Heron
I Opened the Selection in a New Layer
In the Filter Menu, under Topaz, I Clicked on Sharpen AI, and
ran each of the three modules to decide which one to use and concluded that the stabilization module was the best.

After using Sharpen AI
compare eye sharpness before and after

Flatten the image and save the image back to LightRoom
In Lightroom develop module I did my basic editing.

Edit in Develop Module in LR

I then sent the image back to Photoshop where I ran Tin Man Lees Digital Workflow 2.0 (Dynamic Tension Stacking)

After final processing in PS

Finally, I returned the image from Photoshop back into LightRoom
