March 2011 I made my first visit to Costa Rica with Greg Downing and Greg Bosco. After arriving at the airport, I was picked up by a private van and taken to Hotel Bougainvillea. The hotel is noted for its gardens, flowers, and birds.
Next morning after breakfast we loaded our van and took off for our first location Rancho Naturalista which is located in the cloud forest. Views from its deck looked down at the forest and also in the distance to the Turrialba Volcano.
Once we were settled in our rooms, we then set up to photograph hummingbirds in a setup or wander around the grounds photographing. The setups for photographing hummingbirds were on a rotating basis by groups, and those groups that were not shooting hummingbirds were free to photograph scenery, birds, and mammals.
My photography of the hummingbirds were both at the setup and trying to capture them in the wild.
Our next stop was Bosque de Paz where we followed the same pattern. During our stay, we also visited Catarata Del Toro, which is one of the largest waterfalls in Costa Rica and the restaurant is open air, and we set up Hummingbird feeders and also photograph around in the foliage.
A final visit was the Arenal Volcano with photography consisted mainly of birds, landscapes, amphibians, and snakes.
